Porcelain Weaving

Xylocide

2025
Porcelain and thread
12 x 78 in.

Composed of 660 porcelain discs connected by a black thread, Xylocide unfolds a gradient of colours from deep green to white. This slow and precise transition—from life to void—evokes the disappearance of forests, devastated by fires, notably those of summer 2023 in Canada. The green fades into ashen tones, ending in white, a symbol of silence and absence. This chromatic verticality forms a fragile, suspended memorial—a meditation on destroyed beauty and the lingering trace of what was once alive.

Weaving porcelain, a gesture as fascinating as it is intriguing. Sophie’s creations explore the intrinsic relationships between human beings and the elements that surround them. Her porcelain fabrics offer a rich and complex visual experience that varies according to the observer’s position and interaction with the work. By varying the distance and viewing angle, one gradually discovers the details and connections that link each unit. This artistic approach creates an intimate connection between the viewer and the artwork, revealing its full depth and meaning.
