Porcelain and thread
78 x 78 in.
Toute la dentelle du monde (All the Lace in the World) weaves a reflection on the invisible bonds that sustain life. Thousands of hand-shaped porcelain discs, connected by a discreet thread, form a delicate structure in which each element depends on the others. At its centre, a motif of lace-textured discs gives rise to a circle—the fragile heart of a collective balance.
The piece questions what connects, what holds together: those subtle, often invisible threads that, if broken, would cause the whole to collapse. It is a suspended lacework, a vibrating structure, where the poetry of interdependence is revealed. It gives form to the world’s fabric—made of fragile connections and silent interdependencies—that upholds the collective in all its vulnerability and beauty.
Weaving porcelain, a gesture as fascinating as it is intriguing. This collection explores the tension between social connection and individuality. Our bonds shape us, yet they can also confine us. How do we find balance between belonging and uniqueness, between integration and self-expression? A fundamental question at the heart of the human condition.
Sophie’s porcelain fabrics offer a rich and complex visual experience that varies according to the observer’s position and interaction with the work. By varying the distance and viewing angle, one gradually discovers the details and connections that link each unit. This artistic approach creates an intimate connection between the viewer and the artwork, revealing its full depth and meaning.
